Outdoor First Aid (Level 3)
Who is this for?
Outdoor instructors, leaders and practitioners (e.g. walking and climbing leaders, water sports instructors, outdoor educators, DofE and expedition leaders, forest school staff) and anyone working or volunteering in rural or remote environments where medical help may be delayed.
Description
A comprehensive 2-day Level 3 course designed for people who need to provide first aid in outdoor and remote settings. The qualification focuses on managing incidents where weather, terrain and distance from help make first aid more challenging. Learners practise realistic outdoor scenarios so they can confidently assess casualties, provide ongoing care and decide when and how to evacuate.
What you'll learn
- Core first aid skills: scene and casualty assessment, primary survey, recovery position, CPR and AED use.
- Managing serious bleeding, shock, wounds, burns and soft-tissue injuries.
- Treatment of fractures, head, spinal, chest and abdominal injuries, including improvised splinting and movement in remote areas.
- Recognising and managing major illnesses (asthma, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, epilepsy, anaphylaxis, poisoning).
- Environmental issues such as hypothermia, heat illness, bites, stings and prolonged casualty care outdoors.
- Outdoor incident management, casualty monitoring, communication and summoning assistance where help may be more than 30 minutes away.
Course Duration
2 days (typically 12 guided learning hours), scheduled to suit your shift patterns and operational needs.
Certification
Ofqual-regulated FAA Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid (RQF), valid for 3 years and aligned with national outdoor governing body / Institute for Outdoor Learning requirements.
